How Does i-ACTIV AWD® Work?

While you’re on the road, i-ACTIV AWD® is always on the lookout for what’s ahead. It constantly tracks road conditions as well as tiny changes in wheel speeds. Using a series of sensors, the system creates a picture of the surrounding driving conditions. i-ACTIV AWD® interprets the information from the sensors and can make adjustments to the amount of torque allocated to the front and rear axles. Because of this, the i-ACTIV AWD® systems are considered an active torque split AWD system. What is the Front-Wheel Slip-Warning Detection System?

The Front-Wheel Slip-Warning Detection System is another feature that makes use of sensors, but in a different way than the i-ACTIV AWD® system. The sensors track ground speed and front-wheel speed, so the system is able to notice tiny wheel slips that could cause tire spin. Torque Control System works closely with Front-Wheel Slip-Warning and i-ACTIV AWD®. You can even take advantage of this system in FWD mode. It will still almost instantaneously transfer a small amount of torque to the rear wheels and help your vehicle switch to AWD without lag.
